Editing techniques 

The Kuleshov Effect

- E.g shot of woman and baby, shot of man smiling = sympathetic man
VS shot of woman sunbathing, shot of man smiling = creepy pervert man

Apathy - lacking in emotion - negatives on society = less compassion and understanding, allowing more to suffer

Rhythm and Pace  

 - old movies, film had to be cut so more long takes where used
- 'Three colours red' - slow pacing - the camera creeps through the scene as the protagonist does
- 'Taken 3' - very fast choppy editing - can't really see whats happening
- Birdmans minimal editing - very few cuts - shot to look like one long shot
- Ropes - Alfred Hitchcock

- montages - a lot of cuts - passing of time
- Breaking bad prison killings sequence
- montages can have music and no dialogue

Graphic Matching - and dissolves

- Strong visual similarities between shots making a link between the two images/scenes/ideas
- A space.... 2001 - bone vs space ship
- Lawrence of Arabia - Lit match vs sunrise
- Citizen Kane - opening sequence of dissolves

Jump Cut 

- two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly if at all. Gives effect of jumping forwards in time.
- District nine

Elliptical editing  

- parts of the story are deliberately omitted

Cross Cutting 

- alternate between two spheres of action occurring in different places, often simultaneously
- shows scale of conflict as well as increasing tension through multiple spheres of action

Cuts and Dissolves 

- straight cut
- dissolve
- fade
- wipe
- Dip (to black/white)

Metaphor and meaning of the horse scene(s) in Fishtank

1:47:36 Death and disillusion (The Horse) . The horse as a symbol of Male domestication of woman: Horses are commonly used symbols for freedom and beauty, the horse is shackled and dirty and guarded by men - woman are corrupted and imprisoned by men, their freedom is taken. The horse shows how the innocent Mia is corrupted by her surroundings and men (the dirt all over the horse) - White being a symbol of purity. . Ultimately the dirty white house shows how beautiful creatures (horse/woman) have been domesticated by man and in the process become shackled and corrupted. . Therefore if the horse is a metaphor for Mia and her domestication by men, we can imply that in her failed attempts to free the horse and its eventual death that she is also unable to escape domestication and imprisonment by men . Critical ideological approach + Binary opposition  Andrea Arnold uses binary oppositions to explore the ideology of feminism in Fish tank, so looking through a feminist perspective we can better understand the use of Binary opposition within the film. One way a feminist ideology helps us understand binary oppositions in fish tank is through the feminist perspective of Connor's predatory behaviour and maturity which conflicts with Mia's presentation as prey and her immaturity. This is seen during the sex scene between Connor and Joanne that Mia witnesses through a crack in the door; using a range of micro features a strong binary opposition of predator and prey as well as maturity and immaturity is built between Connor and Mia. We see this through the micro features of mise en scene and cinematography, as an extreme close up on Mia is used in conjunction with chiaroscuro which works in tandem to paint Mia as immature and vulnerable, as the extreme close up focuses our atten
