Lychee/ Hamster in disposal scene(s) (WNTAK)
- medium shot of Kevin out the window - implies his responsibility with the Hamster in the drain pipe
- Close up on the Drain overflowing - implying the hamster is in the disposal as Eva gives Celia an excuse as to where the Hamster may be
- Medium close up on Kevin with a sinister smile - the spectator fills in the gaps between the hamster, the close up on the drain and camera pointing the blame at Kevin as Eva does, making it seem Kevin finds a sadistic pleasure in Eva's discovery of the Hamster while he wears this very childish t shirt that doesn't fit him juxtaposing any sinister intentions he has - also shows Eva's continued paranoid state towards Kevin - she cant accept she may of made a mistake in her parenting of the perfect Celia, we can imply that Kevin dislikes this maternal facade that Eva plays with Celia that Kevin sees through or resents as he was mistreated by Eva as a child, reminding her of her failings as a parent to him so therefore she cannot be a good parent to Celia
- Kevin is also seen doing a very typical and normal activity as he plays sport with his dad, either showing that Kevin hinds his sinister sadistic nature under a veil or normality or that Eva is just incredibly paranoid - i mean we never actually see him put the hamster in the drain or leave the cleaning product out right? therefore Ramsey limits us to Eva's subjective and limited perspective of Kevin and his actions as through the cinematography and editing we piece fractured images together, just as Eva pieces these images together to paint a pretty negative view of Kevin, therefore we also empathise with Eva better as we are similarly distrusting of our own memories and what we see as it is constantly reinforced by Franklin and the lack of seeing Kevin doing anything directly only through implications - we are never certain of what we see
- Extreme close up on Eva's bloodied hands that she is washing evoking the story of Macbeth, specifically Lady Macbeth and the spot that wouldn't wash representing her guilt, implying Eva may never be able to wash away her guilt. There are two things i would argue Eva feels guilt for here; NO1) her failings as a parents towards Kevin as he continues down this dark and bloody path and leading onto NO2) her failings as a parent towards Celia through her bad parenting towards Kevin as it has negatively effected Celia with the death of her Hamster and soon the loss of her eye which she also blames on Kevin so therefore in reality blames herself as Kevin's state is due to her failures as a maternal figure to him
- 1:17:43 a very cold colour palette reflecting the sombre mood which is juxtaposed by the cheerful yellow balloons evoking childhood showing the trauma such a young girl as Celia is going through with the loss of her eye - The balloons could also symbolise Eva's desire for escape from parenthood - she is also dressed in a deep red dress symbolising her un-washable guilt, continuing this theme from the previous shot with the same or similar colour - the dark colour could imply that it is staining showing the irreversible nature of her guilt
- Eva and Franklin are placed in the foreground but to the very edge of the frame showing their feelings of isolation as despite sitting next to each other they feel they more distant than ever, neither attempts to console or comfort the other leaving a brief awkward silence that unease's the spectator
- reminiscent of the prison she visits with Kevin, placing her far from the exit therefore showing the distance she stills has to go to forgive herself - distance between foreground and background
- The room is also empty bar Franklin and Eva showing their isolation in this moment
- Eva being at the very margins of the frame also shows how she feels marginalised and or isolated
- "i put it away" echos Celia previously saying how she swore she closed the hamster cage, is this suggesting that Kevin orchestrated both these events or that Eva is being compared to the forgetful nature of a child showing her blaming of Kevin to be almost childish as she cannot accept the blame
- Franklin slowly walks out of the same static frame, further isolating Eva as she is left alone and he physically exits also showing as he gets the physically further from Eva that their relationship is growing ever more distant. The static nature of the shot reflects Franklin's inability to address anything, nothing changes for the better due to his ignorance and the only action he takes is leaving, also representing the coming divorce - it is to late to change anything as the shot is static - the lack of movement showing the lack of change and the inaction of Franklin as he takes his only real action of leaving
- the next frame cuts to Eva again basically alone in an empty practical room (this time someone associated with the law) this shows Eva's continued isolation and Franklin's role in this, when he leaves her she feels completely isolated
- comparatively (1:19:35) to the last scene instead of someone walking away from Eva, we see someone come and sit next to her, we see a side profile close up with Eva in the background out of focus and a woman in the foreground in focus crying struggling to cope where as comparatively Eva's expression is neutral, we then cut to a close up of Eva taking the woman's hand and supporting her - this is far more intimate than the scene with Franklin shrouded in a cold colour palette compared to a slighter warmer palette in this scene as well as the physical intimacy emphasised by the intimacy of the camera with the subjects through the close up that shows that intimate act of taking someones hand
- 1:19:40 Eva and Franklin are framed in a very distant way with |Kevin sitting between them physically separating them like he is mentally separating them - he is getting between them, he is responsible for the continuing degradation of their relationship
- He is framed at the centre of the frame, as he is the centre of their issues - this shot also lacks intimacy being a medium long shot with Eva and Franklin pushed to the edges of the frame trying to be as distant from each other as possible
- Close up on Kevin opening the lychee, a series of close ups are shown of Kevin eating the lychee as tho he is tormenting or teasing Eva - The lychee looks like an eye and the close ups of Kevin's handling of it implies some violence - the lychee bursts as tho mimicking the bursting of an eye
