Joanne and Connor sex scene 52:50
|
. 53:13 - (lighting) With Mia we move through the darkness, laying sinister undertones for the coming event, - Very effective at building tension as we are literally kept in the dark + combined w/ the faint sexual noises (53:24) - chiaroscuro This is almost presented as child like curiosity, a child awoken by a strange sound investigates and the chiaroscuro gives Mia a very child like appearance, there is an innocence in her naivety, further shown at (53:27) the close up combined w/ the chiaroscuro highlights/ draws attention to her large eyes which has child like connotations and therefore connotations of innocence . Contrastingly chiaroscuro is used in the same scene to show the perverse and sinister nature of Mia and Connors growing sexual desires for each other - also shows Connor as predatory, as using the same technique of chiaroscuro Arnold juxtaposes Mia's child like innocence with Connors sexual and male maturity as contrastingly to Mia's eyes Connors muscles are highlighted appearing more defined emphasising his masculinity (53:42) - This combined with Connors sexual dominance of Joanne in the scene creates an effective juxtaposition ultimately between Mia's immaturity and Connors maturity therefore showing how perverse this growing relationship actually is + how predatory Connors actions are + Binary Opposition of: Predator vs Prey, Innocence vs vulnerability, . Mia's face is also reminiscent of a waining crescent moon - make of that what you will - the lighting could suggest she is being consumed by darkness i.e Connor who dominates the focus of this scene . A stretch but... the lighting on Connor and Joanne feels as tho it is lit by moon light (Mia's face mirrors a waining crescent) . (53:43) a figure of a cat becomes vaguely visible behind Connor, hinting at his true intentions . (53:43) The bed itself is also floral foreshadowing Connors 'deflowering' of Mia . Undoubtedly the most sinister part of this scene is at (53:54) when we see Connor for a split second glance up towards Mia with a strikingly sexual and sinister expression; this brings about enigma codes such as how long had Connor known Mia was watching for? Was that glance accidental or intended for Mia? The speed of this cut is extremely effective at creating enigma codes we have nothing more to go on than Connors twisted expression . (53:55) In a split second it cuts back towards Mia in that close up, Mia realising Connor see hers is absorbed back into the darkness just as quickly as we cut away from that expression - This action shows she is visibly frightened showing her to be childlike and can also imply that Connor as a dark force has consumed Mia as she is absorbed into the darkness after an incredibly sinister expression - Again Mias innocence is juxtaposed with Connors sinister intent and nature . This is the point of no return within this film, Connors intentions are made clear in a split second and the ensuing events seem inevitable as Mia is consumed by darkness . (54:07) cementing Connors intentions he shoots another sinister glance towards Mia causing her to retreat to her room where she repeatedly slams her door, a very child like action |
